10-24-07 I have finally de-stressed from making my first
wedding cake ever. The vegan part worked out good, and the cake was
well received. Now I will put up pics of the practice run cake that
we did in August, as well as pictures of the final cake. We were lucky
that the bride and groom didn't want too many chnages between the practice
and the final so we knew what we were doing when it came time to make
the cake. My parents and Jay were instrumental in making this happen.
Big thank yous to you guys!!
Here's a couple of the practice cake:

And, here is the process for the final - first, leveling
and frosting

Next, mixing up fondant

then fondanting and decorating

we then moved all the layers over to the reception site
and went to work assembling, first was the bows.

then the rest of the assembly

then we moved the table back into place

then we decorated the table

Here we are - calling it done, my parents first and
then Jay and I

And, the final product:

And then they ate it!
9-4-07 Well, the test run with all the layers went well.
By request I am withholding those pics till after the actual event.
I am glad that there are just a few minor changes to be made. I know
my people at work enjoyed that cake too!
This is the cake that I made for the
end of summer potluck at the lab.

This is the bow that I practiced on
Kappy's Cake! This bow went together easier, but I do have to say that
fondant on icing does not hold shape. Granted it did get very warm that
day. I did do more decorating with the buttercream, but for some reason
I didn't take pics of that! OH well - we ate it!

This was another cake that I made
for my girlfriend Jen's birthday

I will be making another cake tonight for our end of summer
pot luck tomorrow at work! :) Mmmm cake!
This was my third attempt. The people
at work got to indulge in this one.

7-29-2007 - Today I had my second
try at making a vegan fondant iced cake. This was a 10" round vegan
chocolate cake. First I attached the layers and frosted.

Then, I tried an 1/8 inch thick layer of fondant. I got
better texture as I used powdered sugar on the silicon mat, but there
were a number of boo boos.

I did manage to kinda fix a few of them

And I played around with some more circles

I also tried stripes

and two different types of argyle - which I should have
paid more attention to where I was putting on the frosting accents on
to - but I won't do that again!

All in all, I learned some things, and now I'll get to
see how it cuts and eats! Should be better next time.
7-28-2007 Today I tried my hand at
a vegan fondant iced cake. This is a 6" round cake that has been
torted.

Here it is with the vegan butter-cream frosting layer:

Not too pretty, but not too bad for a first try! Here's
with the fondant base:

Certainly some folds, and rough texture, but we learned
some things. Here's more pics of the final product.

We gave this cake to our neighbor, who was kind enough
to borrow me their cooling rack as I made 3 cakes today. Out of the
5 members of their family, one found it a little dry. But, it cut well.
The only other suggestion was making the base fondant thinner. We did
3/16ths for the base layer and 1/8 for the decorations. Other than that
they loved it and would welcome any more test cake! YAY!
